    Description

This is an original antique playbill from the 1905 stage production of The Wizard of Oz based on the beloved children’s book by L. Frank Baum.   This herald is from the Providence Opera House for week commencing Monday, February 20, 1905.   This is a single sheet printed both sides measuring about 11.75” x 5.5”.
This playbill has a small bit of advertising for the coming attraction of Annie Russell in “Jinny the Carrier” printed at the bottom of the verso but is otherwise entirely dedicated to The Wizard of Oz.   The Wizard of Oz stage play
premiered at the Chicago Grand Opera House on June 16, 1902 and later moved to the Majestic Theatre on Broadway on January 21, 1903, where it ran for 293 performances until December 31, 1904.  The run on Broadway was followed by a tour of the stage production featuring the original cast for which this February 20, 1905 playbill was issued.  Original cast members listed on the playbill include Anna Laughlin as Dorothy Gale, Fred Stone as the Scarecrow, David C. Montgomery as “Nick Chopper, the Tin Woodman, in search of a heart” and Arthur Hill as the Cowardly Lion among others.  The playbill also indicates “Book and Lyrics by Frank L. Baum” and “…Character Costumes by W.W. Denslow (illustrator of the book)…”
This playbill is an original antique featuring the cast of the very first stage production of the Wizard of Oz.  This playbill is fully complete  and well intact with just some toning from age and light handling wear.  Overall condition is very good.  Email any questions. Thanks for looking.
