When shopping for Tri-Fives, most of the corporate cousins tend to get overlooked as buyers focus solely on the Chevrolet of that period and many other fine Tri-Five cars get ignored. Don’t let this 1955 Oldsmobile 98 Holiday Coupe at Mission Classics be one of them. It has undergone a frame-up restoration with a repaint.
Dressed in Polar White over Coral, this color combination is easy on the eyes as well as eye-catching, with its new paint and refinished chrome. The trunk is in very good order and come with jack and full-sized spare tire and wheel. The engine bay is extremely tidy and the chrome bumpers fit tightly to the Fisher Body. The full-size ‘55s from GM were a trim size, maneuverable and relatively easy to park. They had just enough chrome without being overwrought. This particular example was made in Oldsmobile’s Lansing, Michigan factory (VIN code M).
Under the hood is a 371 block CID Rocket V-8 engine with a four-barrel carburetor. It is married to a four-speed Hydramatic automatic transmission, which was quite advanced for the time. The gear range was NDSLR, Neutral-Drive-Second-Low-Reverse. There was no Park, the parking pawl was engaged by putting the transmission in reverse and turning off the engine. The Hydramatic automatic transmission gear selector had an S on it, which was used for better performance when climbing hills.
Drive convenience features include power steering, power drum brakes, power windows, power front seat (code U1), electric clock, handbrake light and courtesy light package.
This Olds rolls on BFGoodrich Silvertown 7.60-15 wide whitewall tires, mounted on steel wheels with coral beauty rings and are topped by original spinner wheel covers.
Inside, the car sports a new, custom white and coral interior. The front and rear bench seats are in very good order, as are the matching inner door panels. There’s a coral-colored carpet and a coral-and-white metal dashboard with a padded top, deluxe two-spoke steering wheel, factory AM radio and day-and-night rearview mirror.
In 1955, the Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight again had a longer wheelbase than the lesser 88s. Standard equipment included turn signals, bumper guards, stainless steel moldings, dual horns, cigarette lighter, front and rear floor mats, inside rearview mirror, foam rubber seat cushions, stainless steel rocker panel moldings, front seatback robe cord, spun glass hood insulation, rear window ventipanes, electric clock, stainless steel wheel discs, custom cushion lounge seats front and rear, handbrake light, courtesy light package, padded dash, deluxe steering wheel with horn ring and windshield washer. Upholstery choices were covert and pattern cloth, leather and pattern cloth, leather and nylon and leather and dimple leather. Standard tire size was 7.70 by 15 inches. The turning diameter was 43 feet.
