For smart and discerning motorists, buying and owning a full-size Oldsmobile could be just as satisfying as a big Cadillac but for a lot less money.
That was the case in 1964 when an Olds 98 Custom Sport Coupe could be owned for less money than its Buick Electra or Cadillac coupe counterparts. Oldsmobile owners could get a bigger car than Chevrolet’s Impala or Pontiac’s Bonneville yet not spend much more.
Built during the second week of April 1964 in Oldsmobile’s flagship factory in Lansing, Michigan, this example is an original survivor car.
Finished in Pacific Mist (code P), the car’s paint and trim are over all excellent order. The car’s chrome bumpers fit tightly to the body and the engine bay is extremely tidy.
This car rolls on American Classic white strip radials, size P235/75R14, at all four corners. Each tire is mounted to a steel wheel with cast wheel covers and center hubcaps. The tires and wheels are all in very good condition.
Under the counterbalanced hood is Oldsmobile’s 394 CID Rocket V-8 engine putting out 345 horsepower! Backing the engine is Olds’ Roto Hydramatic three-speed automatic transmission and a 3.08:1 rear end. Driver convenience features include factory air-conditioning, power steering, power drum brakes, power windows, power locks, a power antenna, a rarely-seen blower-type rear window defroster, a tilt steering column and driver’s side remote mirror.
Inside, the car’s Aqua cloth and vinyl interior (code 386) looks fantastic. The folding front buckets and rear bench seats are in fine form. The matching carpet and headliner look good while the inner door panels’ condition matches those of the seats. The padded metal-and-aqua dashboard looks good with its ribbon-style speedometer warning lights and factory AM radio. The car boasts a 21-gallon fuel tank.
In 1964, the top of the line Ninety-Eight series was offered in six body styles in two-door, four-door and convertible configurations. Standard equipment included: Roto Hydramatic; power steering, brakes, windows and seats; windshield washer; special wheel discs; clock; courtesy and map lights and padded dash. Upholstery was a variety of colored cloth, vinyl and leather. Standard tire size was 8.50 x 14 inches. Ninety-Eights were now built only in Lansing, Michigan that year.
Coupe competition to this Oldsmobile in 1964 includes Buick’s own Electra 225, Riviera and Wildcat, Cadillac’s Coupe de Ville, Chrysler’s 300K, Dodge’s Polara, Imperial’s Crown Coupe, Mercury’s Park Lane, Oldsmobile’s own Starfire and Pontiac’s Bonneville.
If you’re a fan of GM’s big cruisers, this is one you should not simply ignore. Two-door coupes are a rare breed within the full-size realm as well. If this one tickles your fancy, come on down to Mission Classics today to see it for yourself!
