This example was made in General Motors’ Wentzville, Missouri factory prior to being sent to Waldoch for the final conversion.
Finished in Berry Red Metallic, the van’s exterior is in overall good condition. The windshield has a crack on the driver’s side however, it has new headlights, the bodywork is overall good, the engine bay is somewhat tidy and the vinyl-over-chrome bumpers are in good order.
The van rolls on Michelin X Green radials, size 245/75R15 at every corner. Each one is mounted on a factory alloy wheel with the center caps missing. The wheels are in good, original order while the tires are in very good shape. The van’s GVWR is rated at 7,001 to 8,000 and it has a 135-inch wheelbase.
Under the hood is a 5.3L Vortec V-8 engine with multi-point injection (code LM7). It is connected to an electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission (code 4L60-E) and backed with all-wheel drive. Its air conditioner was converted to R-134 refrigerant on July 8, 2013. Besides A/C, driver convenience features include power steering, power brakes, cruise control, tilt steering column, power windows, power locks, power mirrors.
Inside, the van has Medium Dark Pewter vinyl interior with matching carpet and blinds for the windows. There are four captain’s chairs and a three-person bench seat. A rear, fold-down digital video disc (DVD) player with remote is in the ceiling.
The original and aftermarket stereos come with the sale.
The Express and Savana, known as the GMT600 platform, was an all-new design from the previous generation van, which was a unibody design dating from the late 60s. The GMT600 featured full body on frame construction, the new central-port injection V-6 and V-8 engines, dual front air bags and greatly improved ride and handling. The new body-on-frame construction allowed expanded usages in the cut-away applications.
Competition to this van in 2003 include Ford’s E-150, Dodge’s RAM, GMC’s 1500 Savana and Volkswagen’s EuroVan.
