    Description

Antique Shriner's Scimitar and crescent moon lapel pin, made of yellow and white 14kt gold with two (2) mine cut diamonds and one (1) ruby.  These are very small, so I am not even going to attempt to label these with a carat weight.  Even though the size is small on these, they add a nice sparkle and element to this pin.  The diamonds are of traditional quality for diamonds of this size and the ruby has the right color for a Burma; but due to the size I am not able to look for the right aspects with my 30x loupe and neither was my personal jeweler.  It would need analysis to say for sure; but this item is old enough for the supply to still have been readily available from the mines.  The pin and the backing are both 14kt gold and the backing is original to the pin.  I would put this pin made around the turn of the 20th century (1890-1910) and the second part of the Victorian Era.  It comes from the estate of A.D. Cavalier (sometimes spelled Cavaleer) whose father was one of the prominent settlers of the Dakota Territory and was the early territory Post Master General; there is also a county named after him, as well.  His son, whom this belonged to, was also prominent in the Dakota Territory and was a Post Master General.  It weighs approximately 0.6 grams.
